This 3-day stay tour explores rice as a foundation of Japanese everyday life through food, craftsmanship, and rural experiences. Traveling from Kyoto to the countryside of Miyama and on to Fushimi, participants experience how rice has been used in daily living — from fermented foods and traditional cooking to handcrafts and local production. By staying in Miyama and taking part in hands-on activities, this journey offers a deeper understanding of how rice continues to shape local lifestyles and food culture today.

1. Stay and Eat in a Rural Village
Enjoy an overnight stay in Miyama with locally prepared meals, including regional dishes and kaiseki cuisine that highlight local ingredients.

2. Hands-on Rice-Based Experiences
Take part in making fermented seasonings, cooking with them, shimenawa (traditional straw rope) making, and seasonal rural handwork to learn how rice has supported daily life beyond the table.

3. From Miyama to Fushimi: Rice and Belief
In Fushimi, learn how rice has been closely connected to Japanese belief and culture. Through a visit to Fushimi Inari, participants discover how rice has been honored and valued beyond food, shaping traditions that continue today.

Accommodation: Ryori Ryokan Kigusuya

Ryori Ryokan Kigusuya, founded in 1923, is a historic inn in the rural area of Miyama.
Guests stay in the main building, where private rooms provide a calm and comfortable space to relax.
The traditional atmosphere allows for a quiet and unhurried stay.
The experiences on Day 2 take place in Kigusuya’s thatched-roof farmhouse annex, built in 1880. With its irori hearth and wooden beams, the space offers an opportunity to experience everyday life in a traditional farmhouse.
Meals include dishes made from rice-based preparations, along with seasonal dishes.
